Post 5: Man is charged with 1982 Hyde Park bombing

Man is charged with 1982 Hyde Park bombing
The 61 year old John Downey was held by the police when he stepped off a plane at Gatwick Airport on Sunday. He is charged for the murder of four soldiers and 7 horses in the 1982 IRA bombing in Hyde Park. He was one of the IRA members who let off two bombs with a remote control. One of the bombs was placed in a blue Austin and the second one under a bandstand in Regent’s Park. Seven bandsmen died and forty-seven civilians were injured.  A memorial marks the place of the Hyde Park blast and the troop honours it daily by saluting.

My opinion
I wonder why it took them so long to arrest him. Sue Hemming, head of Special Crime and Counter-Terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “we have reviewed the evidence gathered from investigation and authorised them to charge John Anthony Downey.” What I do like is that they are still honouring the victims. It happened tens of years ago but it is something you can’t forget easily. This says something about the ‘war’ between England and the IRA. One of the Hyde Park bombers was Danny  McNamee and in 1987 he was sentenced to 25 years, but the judge overturned his conviction as unsafe.

  1. Better late then never. Even though it took them years to finally convict him it is still a good sign. This also show us like you said that they still honour the victims. But this also give the victims family and friends a sense of justice, now they know that at least one bomber was charged for the crime.
