Blackfish director Gabriela Cowperthwaite: 'It's time for this experiment to end'
Blackfish is a documentary about a killer whale that killed his three trainers. Gabriela Cowperthwaite aims to inform people about the negative effects of this industry on the whales. According to her keeping orcas in captivity for entertainment is an outdated practice that should be stopped. She also states that ‘these parks give us the feeling that we understand these magnificent animals, because we can see them react. We see them nod yes and no, and we imagine that they are really saying yes and no’.

My opinion
I agree with the director that the experimenting has to stop. Tens of years ago researchers wanted to know more about the mystery of the whale and in order to know more they had to capture them. Even if a trainer works 10 years with a orca they can still be killed, because being in a giant fish bowl isn’t their natural environment. They will eventually snap and attack someone and this is what you always should keep in mind. When they react to you like nodding, it doesn’t mean that they understand you and speak your language.

  1. It's sad to hear that three trainer were killed. But you can't blame the whale, they belong out in the ocean where they belong. I'm not going to lie when I say that I would actually love to see an orca nod yes, I mean most people would after seeing the movie Free Willy. But setting an orca free after years of captivity doesn't always work. We have the example of Keiko the orca the orca form Free Willy which was killed in 2003 after being set free.
